Destroy All Humans (PS2)
THQ It's rarely a good sign when a game sells itself on its comedy value as much as its gameplay, but although Destroy All Humans! certainly has its problems it's still a witty and original slice of Sci-Fi hokum. Cast as an evil, Jack Nicholson sounding, alien called Crypto you are sent out to perform the game's titular task in a stylised 1950s America, where the game has good fun poking fun at McCarthy era paranoia and the banality of suburban life. Developed by the same team behind LucasArts' Mercenaries, there are some obvious similarities between the two games. There isn't a single giant game world and you can't go around pinching vehicles but the combat and freedom to explore and destroy virtually anything is very similar. In fact the only vehicle you can pilot is your trusty, and super destructive, UFO, which is parked at a specific spot on each level. On foot you have a range of weapons, including the just-as-painful-as-it-sounds anal probe. You also have a small range of psychic powers, including telekinesis, all of which, along with your weapons and UFO, can be upgraded by collecting people's brains. The problem with the game is that the combat is very shallow and the missions tend to get very samey very quickly. Even the comedy can become repetitive as you hear the same comments again and again. It's no classic for sure, but if the setting and humour appeals you could do a lot worse than Destroy All Humans! -- Harrison Dent ps 2 *

X-Men: Next Dimension (PS2)
Activision Playing X-Men: Next Dimension requires looking at the moves menu. A lot. If you're the kind of person who likes to memorise lists of moves--maybe even finds it fun as it gives you a sense of accomplishment--this game is for you. If you just want a game to play with some friends without cramming as if for an exam, you'd be better off with a different fighting title. But who doesn't love the X-Men? They're all represented here. The biggies (both good and bad): Wolverine, Rogue, Storm and Cyclops as well as Magneto, Mystique and Sabretooth. Other favourites also made the cut, including Gambit, Nightcrawler and Forge. The backgrounds are terrific, and in a particularly impressive design element, you can drift into other landscapes from your original map. For example, if while fighting from inside Dr X's mansion, you throw your opponent out the window, you'll find yourself outside on the garden map. It's a good trick, and it almost makes the load time between games reasonable (rematches are quick, but reloads that change environments are painfully slow). Each character has their own special "super meter" attacks, and all are fitting of the mutant power detailed in the comic books. Playing one-on-one with friends in versus mode, you can calibrate your character so practised players have less "energy" for a more balanced game. These touches are appreciated. So while it's not as addictive as Tekken or any similar benchmark game, X-Men still has appeal with a reasonably well-thought-out game design and endearing character elements. --Jennifer Buckendorff ps 2 *

Metal Gear Solid 2 (PS2)
Konami One of the most anticipated titles in gaming history absolutely lives up to the hype. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty is the follow-up to one of the most captivating and intelligent adventures on the PSone; Solid Snake, everyone's favourite mullet-sporting super-soldier, is back along with many other familiar faces and voices. While Metal Gear Solid was lauded for telling a complex story, this sequel has even more fascinating twists and turns; also, like its predecessor, MGS2 takes console-game storytelling to an entirely new level with stunning in-game movies, great graphics, and game mechanics that let you find your own solutions to its challenges. The game's twisting and at times bizarre plot will undoubtedly keep some gamers perplexed. Konami has replaced the moronic enemies from the first MGS with more cerebral and capable foes; this causes an even greater emphasis on stealth than the original. The controls have been refined and Snake's repertoire of moves has grown, both of which deepen the gameplay. This is, technically and stylistically, one of the best-looking PS2 games on the market. Sound is also top notch, with a fabulous score and outstanding voice acting. What really makes this game such a stand-out is how all of these sight, sound, and story elements combine to immerse the player into an entertainment form between movie and game. It will be years before Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty is surpassed. This is interactive entertainment at its finest. --Raymond M Padilla ps 2 *
